The 5 non-negotiable book recommendations for business leaders. These books are a gift and they are worth their weight in a thousand times in gold than they are to buy.
This is the question I get asked all the time. I get asked this question more than any other question that I get asked. What books do you recommend? Hey, I’m a business person, what books do you recommend? Hey, what books will help me in my business, in life? And so today I’m going to be sharing the five non negotiable books for business leaders.
So I’m going to be sharing my, and these are my recommendations. And I’m going to share them in order. I’m going to be sharing my five non-negotiable book recommendations for business leaders. And here’s a secret if you’re in business, you’re a business leader. It doesn’t matter if you’re an employee. If you’re a boss, if you’re a manager, if you’re a co owner, a partner, a consultant, every single thing that you touch, every single thing that you do, you are leading. And I think there’s this misnomer, that leadership means you have to be appointed to that position or leadership means that you have to be sitting at the top or leadership means that somebody can tell you what to do. Like it doesn’t matter where you are. We are all leaders when we choose to be. And so you can lead from anywhere and affect change. And this is really important.
These are my five non-negotiable books, that’s for business leaders. So anybody I work with any of my students, anybody in the mastermind doesn’t matter. I always recommend these five books and I never stop. And I’m going to recommend them in order. And if I have context, a little bit of story around them, I’m going to share.
Little book clarity by Jamie smart
Business book non-negotiable Lifebook non-negotiable number one, book. Number one is called the little book clarity by Jamie smart. So book number one non-negotiable is called the little book of clarity by Jamie smart. And I recommend this book, intensely because it breaks down the concept of toxic thinking. And I hear this a lot in business. I’ll do this when I’ll start this, when I’ll I’ll adjust it, then I’ll might do it now. And that is toxic thinking and it ends up keeping us stuck. In our business where we don’t want to be in, doesn’t get us the path out. So Jamie Smart’s book, I love this book because it takes about three and a half hours to read it and listen to it.
It’s super short. You can do it in one day and it will change the way in which you see, think about and approach a business and life and give you a tool in your toolbox to help you move forward. And so business success and life success can only come on the other side side of clarity, and this book is the best resource in the world for creating clarity for your business, your products, your messaging, and in life in general. So book number one on my non negotiable books, business leaders is the little book of clarity by Jamie smart.
Breathe by James Nestor
Now book number two and remember, in this order, so book number one, the little book clarity book, number two is called Breathe by James Nestor. Now here’s I guarantee you in your business and I guarantee you in your life that you are going to come up against stress. I guarantee you in your business and in your life that you are going to come up against resistance, that you are going to have obstacles that you are going to have sleepless nights, that you’re going to have stressful times. It is a guarantee. That is why it’s business. It’s a game that we have to evolve and figure out every day. But what does not have to happen is that we do not have to be a slave to that business. We do not have to be reactive to that business. Our job as leaders is to lead with structure, which means we have to be able to hold and hold steady.
We have to be able to set ourselves up to win and take care of our bodies, our minds, and our souls to be able to lead. And so the book breathe by James Nestor is the key to this. And the truth is, is that most people don’t breathe. We talk all day, we take short breaths, we breathe through our mouth and that is not effectively breathing. The average human being like to be an efficient human being. You are supposed to only breathe 5.5 times a minute to completely take care or of yourself and thrive as a human being. That means that you are inhaling and exhaling over an 11 or 12, second period, every single minute to be effectively breathing. And most of us don’t do that. So it causes stress. It triggers our sympathetic nervous system or our fight and flight. It gets our adrenaline up. It gets our fears up and we actually work into situations and make them worse than they really are. So everybody needs to learn how to breathe. I read this book once a month and I literally practice it as much as possible.
So the book is called breathe by James Nestor and being a leader means that we have to have to stand with structure. We have to deal with resistance. We have to deal with hard and uncertain times, but we need to be able to make grounded. Intelligent decisions, which means we need to be take caring of our physical and emotional body, which breath helps with. So this book helps you hone the one skill that every leader and every human must have in order to succeed in life and business, which is breathing. And I would venture out on a limb to say, this might be one of the most important books ever written. Okay. So that’s book number two. Book number one is the little book of clarity by Jamie smart book.
Road Less stupid by Keith Cunningham
Number two is Breathe by James Nestor. Book number three. One of my all time. favorite book, number three is called the Road Less stupid by Keith Cunningham. And I’m telling you why I’m recommending this book. So first off, Keith is a massiveaccomplished businessman. I don’t even know his net worth, but he has had more businesses and more lessons in his life than anybody ever known. And he’s documented the entire thing in a book. And so the book is like an encyclopedia of reference material. You can go skip around chapters, you can read it all the way through. I love his approach. It’s very authentic. It’s very grounded earth and I have picked up more to help catapult my life and business forward from that book than any other book I’ve read, because it is literally a treasure trove of different lessons across the board, but what’s really important about the Road Less stupid is how Keith encourages you to create thinking time.
Thinking time in your life and in your business. And a lot of the times when we’re faced with met with challenges or roadblocks, we react in that moment. Oh, we’re going to fix it. This is what I’ll do. We’re going to fix it. But we react and recreate the problem because we never actually get to the root of it. We get the symptom and then we try to treat the symptom, but we never get to the disease. And so Keith teaches you in this book, how to utilize what he calls thinking time. And it has been the most profound and transformational aspect of my business, which is interesting because I used to live with the belief that my business would only be successful. If I did more. And the truth is, is now my life and business is more successful than ever, because I think more and I do less, but when I do something it’s with clarity and intentionality, because I use that thinking time. And I love Keith the way that he explains this. He says in his book, the road less stupid, how you slow down, think through what you’re doing and avoid expensive mistakes. Like he calls stupid tax. I love stupid tax.
So this book teaches you how to create thinking time. And it gives you a very important questions. Like step-by-step questions that you must ask yourself and consider during the thinking time. So it’s very intentional thinking time. And then I guarantee you and I mean, guarantee you, and this is going to sound like a hard concept, but by creating thinking time and doing less, it’s going to save you a lot of time, energy and money and catapult your results by actually doing less. And so the third book is the road less stupid by Keith Cunningham.
And then books, four and five are hands down. My favorite author ever. They’re from Jonah Berger, who basically changed my life when it comes to business, his teachings, his books have given me a career and given me success because of what I’ve learned from him.
The Catalyst Jonah Berger
And so the two books and I am going to recommend them in an order. So the first book. The first book you need to read is called The catalyst, how to change anybody’s mind. And what Jonah breaks down is the five phases required to shift an opinion or to shift a belief or to get somebody to take an action. And no matter who you are, no matter what you do, if you are a human being. Or a business owner or both which you all are, you are in the game of enrolling people to do things, take an action, lose weight, buy a product, buy a service. Aligned to your beliefs, enroll them into helping you raising money. It doesn’t matter. We are constantly either selling or being sold to we are enrolling or being enrolled. And you’re a leader, which means you are enrolling people 24/7. And this book breaks down step by step, what is required to effectively change somebody’s mind, which means you need this skill. To put things into practice, to meet them where they are to help overcome their reactants or the distance or their endowments, give them corroborating evidence.
All of the things that are covered in that book to get somebody from where they are to where either they need to go, or you want them to go. This could be your team, your staff, your employees, your customers, your business partners, business consultants. It doesn’t matter. Every single thing you do in your life. If you are either being enrolled. Or you are enrolling. And as leaders, we are enrolling all the time, 24/7. And so this book, the catalyst is the best reference material and tool that you can have in your pocket without you having to go study NLP and hypnosis and all those things, which I recommend. But this book alone is literally a PhD or a doctorate in how to effectively change people for the better and have the impact that you want to have.
And so that book number four is called the Catalyst by Jonah Berger, which brings me to the cleanup spot, which is book number five, which is also by Jonah Berger and book number five is literally the book that gave me success. This is the only one marketing book that I read for three years. Read this book cover to cover at least 20 times. I read this book so much that I basically, had it memorized. I knew what chapters, what sections, what the takeaways were. And I did everything in my power to embody it. And this is the book that helped me be successful, civilized caveman and all my other business ventures. And I still use it every single principle from that book till this day it’s utilized currently. And that book is called contagious by Jonah Berger.
Contagious by Jonah Berger
Contagious by Jonah Berger for book number five. And the reason that I shared these books in this order is a very intentional. So the reason I recommended these books in orders, you’ve heard me say numerous times, nobody has a marketing problem. Everybody has a relationship problem with themselves, their team and their customers informed in that order.
But when we think about a relationship with ourselves, we need to be intentional and methodical about the containers we create to guarantee our success. So the book number one, the little book of clarity by Jamie smart gets into our brain. The place where we think a lot and gets us out of our own way of our thinking to have effective, positive thinking to move us forward, which then brings us to the next book, which is breath. So once we’re thinking clearly, then we physically put our body into check. So we make our emotional state great. And then we get into our physical body, which also helps our emotional body with our breathing. Once we are thinking clearly and breathing effectively, then we get into the Road Less Stupid.
And then that gives us our thinking time. So now we’re going into our thinking time, crystal clear and grounded in what it is that we’re creating, why we’re creating it and being proactive, not reactive. Which then allows us to think about our impact in the world, our lighthouse, our mission, and how we’re going to serve people then we move into the catalyst because now we are solid. Our mental state is solid. Our physical state is solid. And then we are crystal clear on where we are going, which means now it’s time to figure out where our customers are and know how to move them closer to us or our employees or our staff members or our families or our relationship, because now your house is in order.
Your foundation is solid, which brings us to the book, the catalyst. Now that helps you understand where are they are because you’re solid in your lighthouse to bring them closer to you. And affect that change. And so you plan what that would look like. This is where they’re going to be. This is where I’m going to take them. This is how I’m going to close the distance. This is how I’m going to help them let go of that endowment. This is how I’m going to give corroborating evidence. And this is literally you designing everything. And so then the very final book book five is contagious because contagious. Is how things catch on or how you would go about marketing this, because now you have a solid house, solid foundation with a guaranteed success rate. Once somebody hits your front door, because you put the time and work into cleaning and building your house. Oh, so it’s effective. And now you can invite other people. Which brings us to book number five, which is called contagious.
And if I, I could only recommend one book for the rest of my life, to every marketer in the world, it would be the book contagious hands down.
You utilize this book to capitalize on the 86% of marketing. That is word of mouth that most of your competitors straight up ignore. How to create brand product and messaging that people can’t stop talking about. And literally if you sell anything anywhere, which every single one of you does, this book breaks down step by step by step, how the human brain works, why marketing works, why it doesn’t work, what to do, what not to do, why somebody can charge $170 for a cheese steak across the street from somebody who can only charge 11. And one of them is thriving in there business.
This book is the book that guided me to become one of the most. Sought after and highest paid digital marketing consultants in the world. And sometimes I don’t even like saying that, but like, you guys hear that and it’s true. Like I’ve worked with some of the biggest companies in the world because I read that book five times that book gave me a skill set and clarity to literally accomplish more with marketing than I ever could have accomplished in any class or course, or PhD or doctorate or degree, because it changed the way that I thought it wasn’t about marketing. It was about understanding the human psychology on the other side of marketing. What makes us tick? What makes us respond and understanding all of those pieces. So I could literally tactically and ethically put them into place to take people on a journey.
And so those are the five books that are non negotiables for me, for business leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs, and even humans. Every one of these books applies to being a human as well. And they are literally, they should be, they should be required to own a business. Like you shouldn’t be able to get a business loan or a business license or sell a product or build a website until you’ve read those five books in that order.
And so I made this really easy. I actually linked up all these books on the website. So if you just go to www.mindofgeorge.com/books.
